Onward and Upward

It’s Sisyphean of sorts, but the other way round. So more absurd, even, isn’t it?
I’m always experiencing a certain kind of bliss, incomparable to something else than moving and rising without walking and climbing, becoming a spectator of acclimatized commerce on this phantasmagorical, child-devouring machine.
Like a traveling shot, I’m feeling camera-like and directed.

I forgot to buy the lavender shampoo to talk to you, here. Ride with me, to the mezzanine.

Onward and Upward is a film essay on the topic of escalators. It delves into the machine’s history, its economic peculiarities, the encounters it stimulates and the risks involved using it. The film combines fiction, citations and lists. It was made for a former shopping mall, now empty and turned into a cultural venue.

Movie shown at Denderland, Geraardsbergen, September 2021.
